“I will take you as my people and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out of the burdens of the Egyptians.”
When God was getting Israel out of Egypt, He made a very significant statement, taking complete ownership of Israel as His peculiar people. This goes back to Abraham through Jacob and Isaac to the covenant and promise God made. It is one thing knowing the God of the universe exists, but a completely different story knowing that particular God has chosen YOU to be HIS people and to have him as God over you. Recent history has shown us how jealous nations can be and to what extent they will go to protect their identity, their interests and sovereignty. To see that the God of the universe has His eyes on a people that are His own, that is something to take serious thought of. It is particularly interesting in the narrative in Genesis 12:1-3 where God makes it clear when he called Abraham out of his comfort zone into a new territory, to the place that He had willed to him. In that exchange, seven things were promised to Abraham.
- I will make you a great nation
- I will bless you
- I will make your name great
- You shall be a blessing
- I will bless those who bless you
- I will curse those who curse you
- In you ALL the families of the earth shall be blessed
It is very significant that God specifically calls out Israel as His chosen people in Exodus 6:7, referencing what He had promised Abraham. God chose Israel as His own, to show Himself strong on their behalf and eventually raised out of them, a savior. Through Isaac, Abrahams’s seed, came Isreal and out of whom Jesus the Christ. In Christ (Galatians 3:13-14), the curse of the law was broken, and the blessing of Abraham extended to the Gentiles who were outside the covenant of Abraham. Redemption from the curse and access into the presence of God Almighty was offered. Through that, God’s supreme love was poured out so that none should perish but come to the saving knowledge of Christ. It all came through a person and a nation under covenant with the Almighty God. You can become a part of this through Christ and be part of God’s covenant with Abraham.
