~ I Timothy 2:1-4 ~
“Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
~ Jeremiah 29:7 ~
“And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace”.
When Paul gave the exhortation to Timothy and the body of Christ to pray all kinds of prayers for all people, for kings and those in authority, he was in essence acknowledging that there will come a time when these people, these kings, these leaders in authority will NEED all kinds of prayers. There will come a time when they will be down and will need prayers to lift them up, there will come a time when they will lose their way and will need prayers to find their direction, there will come a time when they will be discouraged and in uncertain situations and will need prayers to stay the course, there will come a time when they will become confused and will need prayers to find wisdom, there will come a time when they will be in conflict and will need prayers to find a resolution. Enshrined in Paul’s exhortation is a call to the church to LEAD on their knees, all people, especially kings and those in authority, such that there will be a peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. In all godliness because, His divine power has given us all it takes to live that way according to 2 Peter 1:3 and reverence because that is the way into God’s presence in all boldness.
There is no greater tragedy than when leaders lose their way. How can one follow leaders who have lost their way? Where will the follwers go? In that situation, where there is confusion in leadership, peace is elusive, godliness is endangered, and reverence is threatened. That sets the precedence for a situation where progress is stalled and nothing of value is achieved. The option for success and achievement is written in the words “one mind” and “one purpose”, an unquestionable sense of unity and direction. When the people of Israel were in captivity in Babylon in the time of the old testament and the prophets, they were exhorted diligently by the Lord to pray for the peace of those cities in which they were captives, for in the peace of the cities they would have their peace. Therefore, in our time as free men and women there is need to let voices be heard on high so that PEACE will be upon us and many more who depend on it. We therefore pray this day, that our leaders find their way, so there will be peace in the CITY.
